Improve your well-being by spending more time surrounded by natureMay 2010It is now feeling more like summer! The days are getting longer and warmer, and now is the perfect time to get outside and spend more time surrounded by nature. If you read the BBC News website, you may have noticed a recent article titled Green exercise quickly boosts mental health More and more research is beginning to show the beneficial effects that nature has on our mental well-being. Just performing activities outdoors in green spaces has been shown to have significant positive effects on our mental health. Issues such as depression, anxiety, addictions, stress, anger, relationship issues, confidence and self esteem, as well as many others, can all benefit. In some countries GPs are already beginning to recognise the benefits, and are starting to prescribe nature-based activities and therapies as a healthier alternative to drugs. So you may want to consider getting out of your home or workplace more often and begin to experience the restorative and healing effects of the natural world. Research shows that as little as 5 minutes on a regular basis can have significant positive benefits. So why not try eating your lunch in the local park instead of the office. Or get out and do some outdoor activites such as walking, gardening, cycling, fishing, boating or horse-riding. Or if that all sounds a bit too energetic for the moment, just chill out in your garden or local park for a while. If you really enjoy the natural world and outdoor activities, or youve just found it helpful getting out into some green space, then Im sure youll be interested in some of the nature-based therapies and workshops I that I offer. Look out for further information on nature-based personal development workshops and retreats, and Ecotherapy taster days, which will use the amazing restorative and healing powers of nature combined with all the benefits of counselling, psychotherapy and coaching
