What is supervision? Supervision is a process which aims to provide a supportive alliance between you and a supervisor, in order that the you can maintain the highest standards of working and continue to develop your professional skills and yourself as a professional. You benefit from insights gained from having the additional more detached perspective of the supervisor. Supervision also aims to ensure that the your practice is ethical and that your client's well-being is being maintained. Supervision protects the client by involving an impartial third party in your work with your clients. This helps you reduce risk of oversight and overstepping of boundaries. It helps you to reflect on your work, thoughts, feelings, interactions and general approach with your clients. All this helps improve the value you provide to your clients and ensures continuing professional development of yourself and your skills.
Why do you need Supervision ?
What supervision is not?
It is really up to you to ensure that you have received a high enough standard of training to be in practice. Supervision is not about training or personal therapy, the exception to this would usually be discussion or demonstration of specific concepts or techniques as a suggestion or an alternative aimed at broadening your skills and perspectives. One of the purposes of supervision is to ensure you work safely within the limits of your training, experience and ability so that you protect your own well-being, and you do no harm to your clients. Supervision is also about helping you to grow as a professional so you will be continually encouraged to expand the limits of your skills, experience and confidence. It is also up to you to ensure that you are of a sound enough mind to be in practice. If it is noticed that any of your own personal issues are intruding into and affecting your client sessions or your practice, this will be discussed. Personal therapy may be suggested. Due to boundary issues it is not usually considered appropriate for therapy to be provided by your supervisor. As a supervisor I can provide and offer guidance with:
Why is supervision important for therapists? It is important for therapists to be supervised for a number of reasons. Many therapists work in isolation and therefore do not have other therapists to use as a benchmark to compare themselves against. Even if they work alongside other therapists, the client sessions are usually carried out on a one-to-one basis and are therefore private and confidential. Supervision can act as that much needed external check. Without a regular evaluation of confidence versus competence, the therapists confidence in their skills may be less than their competence. In this case the therapist may not be developing their skills or practice as well as they potentially could. The opposite case would be when the therapist may begin to believe that they are far more skilled than they actually are. This could lead to inappropriate use of skills, which could be unethical or even dangerous for the client. Supervision checks on the therapist, to encourage progress and keep them focussed. Without supervision the therapist may be unaware of mistakes that are being made or if they are aware of them they may be unsure of how to rectify the mistakes. Supervision ensures that the therapist does not breach ethical boundaries set out by their governing body which ensures the clients well-being. What therapies can you provide supervision for? I can provide supervision for a wide range of alternative and complementary therapies and practices. Due to the way supervision mostly focuses on how you work, rather than the specific details of your therapeutic approach, it is not entirely necessary for the supervisor to be trained in your exact form of therapy. In fact it can actually help broaden your own understanding because you can benefit from the supervisors different perspective. Note: I am currently unable to provide supervision for those working towards accreditation with the BACP or UKCP. Just a few examples of therapies I can offer supervision for :
What form can the supervision meetings take? Meeting face to face is the preferred method, but if it is too far for you to travel I also offer supervision by telephone or over the internet.
Frequency of supervision sessions The frequency of your supervision will largely be determined by the requirements of your governing body. Some governing bodies specify a minimum number of hours supervision per month, others require that you have supervision in proportion to the number of client contact hours. If your governing body does not specify the exact number of hours of supervision, or you are not a member of a governing body, I would simply suggest you do one hour of supervision on a regular monthly or bi-monthly basis. What qualifies you as a supervisor? I hold an Accredited Supervisor Certificate which is accredited by the National Council of Psychotherapists (NCP) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR). I have also been in full-time private practice as a the therapist since 2002, and am a fully trained and qualified psychotherapist, NLP Master Practitioner, Advanced Hypnotherapist, Life Coach, Ecotherapist and Stress Management Consultant.
