Psychotherapy
From the UKCP
What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is the provision, by a qualified practitioner, of a formal
and professional relationship within which patients/clients can profitably
explore difficult, and often painful, emotions and experiences. These
may include feelings of anxiety, depression, trauma, or perhaps the loss
of meaning of one's life. It is a process that seeks to help the person
gain an increased capacity for choice, through which the individual becomes
more autonomous and self determined. Psychotherapy may be provided for
individuals or children, couples, families and in groups.
A Psychotherapist thus works with people who have emotional, behavioural,
psychological or mental difficulties. The actual work is mainly to encourage
the client to talk and explore their feelings, beliefs and thoughts, and,
sometimes, relevant aspects of and events in their childhood and personal
history. Some psychotherapists work to help the patient/client understand
more about their problems and then make appropriate changes in their thinking
and behaviour. As a result, the work can last over quite a long term.
Brief psychotherapy is also possible, especially to help someone resolve
a more immediate crisis. There are a number of different psychotherapeutic
approaches: Cognitive Behavioural, Psychodynamic, Psychoanalytic, Systemic
(Family & Relationship), Humanistic, Integrative, Transpersonal, Experiential,
Hypno-Psychotherapy, etc. ??
From wikipedia
Psychotherapy is an interpersonal, relational intervention used by trained
psychotherapists to aid clients in problems of living. This usually includes
increasing individual sense of well-being and reducing subjective discomforting
experience. Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques based on experiential
relationship building, dialogue, communication and behavior change and
that are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient,
or to improve group relationships (such as in a family).
Most forms of psychotherapy use only spoken conversation, though some
also use various other forms of communication such as the written word,
artwork, drama, narrative story, music, or therapeutic touch. Psychotherapy
occurs within a structured encounter between a trained therapist and client(s).
Purposeful, theoretically based psychotherapy began in the 19th century
with psychoanalysis; since then, scores of other approaches have been
developed and continue to be created.
Therapy is generally used to respond to a variety of specific or non-specific
manifestations of clinically diagnosable crises. Treatment of everyday
problems is more often referred to as counseling (a distinction originally
adopted by Carl Rogers) but the term is sometimes used interchangeably
with "psychotherapy".
Psychotherapeutic interventions are often designed to treat the patient
in the medical model, although not all psychotherapeutic approaches follow
the model of "illness/cure". Some practitioners, such as humanistic
schools, see themselves in an educational or helper role. Because sensitive
topics are often discussed during psychotherapy, therapists are expected,
and usually legally bound, to respect client or patient confidentiality.
Psychotherapy can be seen as an interpersonal invitation offered by (often
trained and regulated) psychotherapists to aid clients in reaching their
full potential or to cope better with problems of life. Psychotherapists
usually receive remuneration in some form in return for their time and
skills. This is one way in which the relationship can be distinguished
from an altruistic offer of assistance.
Psychotherapy often includes techniques to increase awareness, for example,
or to enable other choices of thought, feeling or action; to increase
the sense of well-being and to better manage subjective discomfort or
distress. Psychotherapy can be provided on a one-to-one basis or in group
therapy. It can occur face to face, over the telephone, or, much less
commonly, the Internet. Its time frame may be a matter of weeks or many
years. Therapy may address specific forms of diagnosable mental illness,
or everyday problems in managing or maintaining person relationships or
meeting personal goals. Treatment of everyday problems is more often referred
to as counseling (a distinction originally adopted by Carl Rogers) but
the term is sometimes used interchangeably with "psychotherapy".
Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques to influence or persuade
the client to adapt or change in the direction the client has chosen.
These can be based on clear thinking about their options; experiential
relationship building; dialogue, communication and adoption of behavior
change strategies. Each is designed to improve the mental health of a
client or patient, or to improve group relationships (as in a family).
Most forms of psychotherapy use only spoken conversation, though some
also use other forms of communication such as the written word, artwork,
drama, narrative story, or therapeutic touch. Psychotherapy occurs within
a structured encounter between a trained therapist and client(s). Because
sensitive topics are often discussed during psychotherapy, therapists
are expected, and usually legally bound, to respect client or patient
confidentiality.
Psychotherapists are often trained, certified, and licensed, with a range
of different certifications and licensing requirements depending on the
jurisdiction. Psychotherapy may be undertaken by clinical psychologists,
social workers, marriage-family therapists, expressive therapists, trained
nurses, psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, mental health counselors, school
counselors, or professionals of other mental health disciplines. Psychiatrists
have medical qualifications and may also administer prescription medication.
The primary training of a psychiatrist focuses on the biological aspects
of mental health conditions, with some training in psychotherapy. Psychologists
have more training in psychological assessment and research and, in addition,
in-depth training in psychotherapy. Social workers have specialized training
in linking patients to community and institutional resources, in addition
to elements of psychological assessment and psychotherapy. Marriage-Family
Therapists have specific training and experience working with relationships
and family issues. A Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) generally has
special training in career, mental health, school, or rehabilitation counseling.
Many of the wide variety of training programs are multiprofessional, that
is, psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses, and social workers
may be found in the same training group. Consequently, specialized psychotherapeutic
training in most countries requires a program of continuing education
after the basic degree, or involves multiple certifications attached to
one specific degree.
What
is Contemporary Psychotherapy?
The word con-tempo-rary
means literally with time or moving in time. This
can indicate a number of the defining features of Contemporary Psychotherapy:
- it is aware of
and responds to current advances in its own and other fields of knowledge;
- it is sensitive
to current sociological, cultural and political issues;
- it works with the
full life trajectory - past, present and future - of the client;
- it responds flexibly
to different stages and cycles in the clients progress;
- it utilises the
naturally occuring cycles and altered states of the human system;
- it recognises the
differing time requirements and time constraints affecting the treatment
of each client.
Definition by Mike Shallcross and Pamela Gawler-Wright.
September 14th, 2007.
All NLP
therapy is carried out in an awake state, and is therefore particularly
suitable for people or organisations who do not feel comfortable with
the idea of hypnosis but who still would like to benefit from a speedy
and effective form of therapy.
My services
can treat many of the things that you would normally visit a counsellor
or psychoanalyst for, and a lot more. Most
specific issues can be dealt with in around three to five sessions, for
more deep rooted problems, possibly six or more may be required.
NLP is a
model of how individuals structure their own unique experiences in life.
Using NLP we can step into the clients view of the world to discover,
patterns of thought, beliefs, values and help the client to change.
NLP can be
very quick and effective, 2 to 6 sessions are commonly all that is required
to deal with a specific issue. For more deeply rooted issues more sessions
will be required. When compared to traditional talking therapies such
as counselling which can often require weekly sessions for months or even
years, it is clear that fewer sessions ultimately mean less cost to you,
both emotionally, and in terms of treatment expenses and lost productivity.
Many people
who have previously been for some form of talking therapy, often say,
it was nice to talk to someone about their problem, and they gained an
intellectual understanding of it, but it didn't actually help them solve
it. NLP is different, it is pro-active and focused on your outcomes, empowering
the client to change their own perceptions of the past and build useful
resources for the future.
I have had
remarkable success using NLP with both my corporate and private clients,
and have successfully dealt with a number of issues including stress,
PTSD, emotional problems, anxiety, depression, anger management, panic
attacks, phobias, negative thinking, low self confidence, grieve, OCD,
drug/alcohol problems, goal achievement, motivation, performance anxiety,
low self image and more.
All treatment is carried out privately on a one-to-one basis. Most sessions
will last approximately one hour, though if a little extra time is needed
then that is not usually a problem.
What
can you expect?
The emphasis
will be on how you create who you are today from experiences past and
present as well as your ideas about your future. The main focus is on
how you do what you do rather than why.
I will seek
to help you, to identify your desired state or goals. I will then guide
you to achieve them by using your own and new resources and skills. This
can involve changing beliefs that limit your success, identifying new
beliefs, changing patterns of your behaviour, or developing new behaviours
which help you to have more choices.
I will be
paying close attention not only to what you say but also to the words
that you use, your body language and your behaviour. From this I will
suggest changes that can be made that will help you become more in control
of your life now and in your future. This means that you will learn
new skills that will help you to achieve the success you want.
All cases
are treated individually, so the structure of most sessions and the number
of sessions needed will depend on you and your particular issues. However
treatment will follow the following basic steps.
Stage
1 - Initial Session
During the
first session we will:
- Discuss
your particular issues and develop an understanding of your current
situation and how you find it distressing or problematic.
- Discuss
what you want to gain from the therapy and the options available to
you.
- Give you
an indication of the number of sessions that may be required.
- Identify
a set of therapeutic goals, and any potential obstacles to success.
- Determine
a series of smaller achieveable 'chunks' or tasks and a therapeutic
strategy that will allow you to move from your current problematic situation
towards your desired goal.
Stage
2 - One or More Sessions
During this
stage we will employ specific patterns of transformation to allow you
to begin moving from problem state to solution state.
Some of the
things we may work on:
- Changing
behaviours
- Enhancing
existing behaviours
- Developing
new skills and resources
- Changing
your perceptions of events
- Transforming
limiting beliefs
During each
session we will also review progress towards your goals and amend our
therapeutic strategy accordingly.
Stage
3 - Final Session
Tidy up any
loose ends. Review progress towards your goals and confirm that work is
complete.
My
services can be tailored to your individual or company needs, and range
from one to one private therapy or coaching sessions through to group
training and workshops.
I
recommend booking a 30 minute Initial Consultation first. This
gives us the chance to begin to explore your issues and your requirements
further,
and give you honest answers to any questions you might have.

you are ready to make the inner changes you need, just phone

'8yrs
of prescribed anti-depressants never even scratched the surface
of my condition. 4 sessions of NLP empowered me to be my 'true'
self and gave me the ability to handle situations which (previously)
filled me with anxiety due to low self esteem & a sub-zero confidence
level.
My
mind is finally a nice place to be thanks to NLP.'

'I feel
much better thank you. I really don't worry about blushing as much
as I used to and I do feel like I blush less and am just generally
less self conscious about it. Thanks for your time! '
